Happy holidays

I love to watch happy holidaymakers basking on our beaches in July and August, enjoying harbourfront fish and chips – as long as the seagulls stay away! –and grinning for family photos. I don’t even mind when they amble absent-mindedly off the pavement and into the road when I’m dashing across town for a meeting and moving at twice their speed!

Golden sands

Visitors’ enthusiasm for everything they’re seeing and doing on their Cornish holiday is so infectious and heartwarming. On the spectacular train ride from St Erth to St Ives, they gaze out of the windows as the golden sands of Hayle, Lelant and Carbis Bay roll by far below. I once heard a woman say excitedly: “I can smell the wild lavender!”. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that on that hot, dry day I’d just applied some hand cream – of which the main ingredient was essential oil of lavender!

Ancient and beautiful land

I’ve been writing about the people and places of Cornwall for many years, and I’m constantly on the lookout for fresh views and unusual angles. But if I’m ever tempted to take it all for granted – this ancient and beautiful land where my family have lived for centuries – I just spend a few minutes watching the smiles on the faces of our summer visitors, and I see Cornwall through new eyes.
