Oodlebooks v. Amazon

25 Jul , 2016

This blog was inspired by a tweet that was sent to the Oodlebooks Twitter account about the new platform – www.oodlebooks-author.com

“Why do you say it’s “free,” & then hit people with a charge just to add books to the site? Amazon does this for free.”

We do have a more detailed ‘HOW IT WORKS’ page on the site, which does state clearly any investment required, but I felt it important to address the BIG differences between Amazon and Oodlebooks – and this question of anything being FREE!

First of all, it’s not an either/or scenario.  Oodlebooks does not directly sell or fulfil purchased books. Oodlebooks is an ‘Author Marketing Platform’. There is a real difference here. Amazon lists your books for free then takes a percentage of sales. So Amazon isn’t free either – it is a massive multi-billion pound organisation. Believe me, Amazon makes money from it’s authors?  Watch the video below for a quick 90 seconds on what services Oodlebooks offers to authors that is different to Amazon and other book store sites.

Oodlebooks requires a sign-up fee – which at present is half price at £50.00.  For this sign-up fee you receive an awesome Book Marketing Widget (we know other sites charging $999 for these) your own profile page and account ready to get your fans on board and regularly email them from within your new author-fan account. The site is there to help you sell more books by helping you to grow your fan base. and if the books

The sign-up fee is used to create a wonderful interactive marketing experience for your book for your readers to enjoy (see the example below).  This new technology has been created by the wonderful people at Neilsen (the ISBN agency) by their Book2Look department. We purchase this technology on the author’s behalf providing them with a unique link and a mini-website/widget that creates a true book experience for new and existing fans of the author.

We do not take any percentage of sales of any books as the ‘Shopping Cart’ link within your book marketing widget takes the purchaser to wherever you want them to purchase the book. That could be Amazon, another online bookstore, or your website, or all three if you wish.

There is then a £10 monthly fee that enables the author to use as many of the marketing facilities and allows them to access all the marketing advice available within their account. The most important action for the author is to interact with their growing list of fans via all their existing social media and to get them to TURN THEIR HEART TO RED on the Oodlebooks site. This then adds that person to their mailing list within their account – from here they can message this growing list with updates on new books, giveaways, future book events or talks, and competitions, using our tip sheets on how to connect with your fan list on a regular basis.

Oodlebooks is a great way to grow the KNOW, LIKE and TRUST relationship that is needed when building a fan base. There are so many books available how can anyone carve a career out of continued book sales unless they have a band of ardent fans supporting their corner and telling others?

Fanology is the principle used within the site and is based on relationship-marketing.

To read the e-book ‘FANOLOGY: Create Fans. Sell Books.’ By the site’s founder Gail Powell – go to – http://amzn.to/1PnkbE3  or receive a download for free when you sign up as an author.

The uniqueness of the Oodlebooks site helps authors to actively grow their fan base by simply asking followers to ‘turn their heart to red’ on the profile page on the site.  This registers their vote and helps to put the author on the Home Page.

The TOP TEN AUTHOR leader board shows the authors with the most fans. Any author on the top ten list has additional social media promotion via the marketing team at Oodlebooks and their book cover appears in the slider at the top of the site.

Why are fans so important?

Fans will tell others in their networks about you (the author) and your book/s and will often purchase anything else you write in a similar genre or topic once they have enjoyed one of your books. They are your best sales people.

Make no mistake – this is not a site for just uploading your book and seeing what happens. If you take this course of inaction (even on Amazon), you will not sell very many books at all. The ‘build it and they will come’ philosophy has long gone since the amount of books and authors available online has made discoverability almost impossible without direct marketing techniques.

Oodlebooks offers all authors the chance to create a profile, have a Book2Look marketing widget created that acts as its own sales tool, and to grow a fan base to communicate with on a regular basis.

There are only a few actions required once you have signed up for your author account.

  1. Ask your social media networks to go to oodlebooks.com and ‘turn my heart to red’ which will grow your fan list on the site.
  2. Regularly log in and send messages to your growing list about what’s happening in your author-world and send out any offers/giveaways that you have available.
  3. Share your Book2Look marketing widget link so potential readers can –
  • See inside your book
  • Watch a video trailer of your book (optional)
  • Share it easily on social media (easy-to-use buttons to enable your readers to do this instantly)
  • Read reviews
  • Buy your book/s

There is no need to keep asking ‘BUY MY BOOK!’  anywhere using Oodlebooks and the principles of  ‘Fanology’ –  the book sales will simply follow.

Oodlebooks does need you to be active with promoting your book link and asking people to ‘turn your heart to red’ and like any form of marketing, the amount of success will be directly linked to how much effort the author puts into sending out the message to ‘become a fan.’

We would love you to become a part of the Oodlebooks author family or a fan of one of our many fantastic authors.

Finally, on the subject of FREE – I’ve never been a big fan. To make anything work successfully, there has to be some cost involved. For the creators and team behind Oodlebooks to be able to continue to grow and innovate – and for the purchaser to see value in their investment – then this very small investment to help market you and your books really is a no-brainer!

I would love to welcome you to the Oodlebooks-Author family and be able to help you to grow your fan base and create the author-marketing success that you seek.
